AMERICAN SAMOA by Rob Shaffer
Rob Shaffer has been closely associated with Samoa and its people for 42 years. He has lived in Samoa for 22 years and of those 22 years, first in 1964, then again in 1967. In January, 1969, he began serving as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years on the island of Savai'i.
Shaffer's positions in Samoa include a Peace Corps staff position in Apia, and as a teacher at Faga-itua High School from 1972-75. He held the position of Desk Office of Territorial Affairs. U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. in 1975-76. He is presently the Executive Director for the Centennial 2000 program. Shaffer is fluent in the Samoan language. In 1976 he was bestowed the "High Chief title "Lealamanu'a" by the chiefs and orators of Iva, Savai'i, one of only a handful of non-Samoans to have received this honor. He holds a bachelor's degree from San Jose State University and a lifetime California Teaching Credential from San Diego State. He has been a teacher, a UPI and AP corespondent, a freelance writer, general manager of Van Camp Samoa, a hospital administrator and an assistant to four American Samoa governors. Shaffer recently completed a historical novel titled SAMOA. The novel covers Samoa's history from 1,300 B.C. through 1967. Much of the historical data gathered in that research was used for the text in this book. Rob Shaffer is married to Sina Liai of Apia, (Western) Samoa. They have three children, Lori, James and Jessica. |
